Friction and back-off are two of the biggest problems you face when you're working downhole, trying to manipulate tools like packers, anchors, bridge plugs, etc.
A tubing swivel at the top of the tubing string reduces friction between tubing and elevators to a minimum, easing rotation and reducing the possibility of backing off the top collar.
Circulating Tubing Swivels allow surface connections to remain in place while the tubing string is rotated or moved vertically. They provide a lifting point for the elevators located above a high-capacity thrust bearing, and permit one or two connections for discharge or flow lines. A single flow connection, transverse to the tubing axis, is normally provided. Two such transverse connections, or a single in-line connection, allowing wireline tools to run through the swivel, are options.
Swivels are available in two sizes, Standard and Heavy Duty. The larger size is equipped with a box/pin "saver sub".
